Philosophy with children: What does it mean to be a friend?

Mahboubeh worked with the children today in dialogue while the ECE students listened and
watched the Engaged Philosophical Inquiry (EPI) unfold.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

After reading a short story depicting Piglet and Pooh sharing a tender moment the children wondered together about what it means to be a friend.  Lucas said that he couldn’t be a friend with a flower because it can’t move or talk.  The conversation unfolded to wonder if this is true in all cases.  Do all friends have to move?  Do they have to talk?
Imagine sitting with children for 45 minutes talking about this philosophical issue in an unhurried and  OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAinquiring way.
The beautiful moment was when Lucas felt free enough to change his thinking based on what he had heard and thought further about.
We can’t wait until next week.
